1. Why does a fire truck show up when I call for EMS?

In the case of life-threatening emergency, we will dispatch a fire truck along with an EMS unit to provide extra assistance since all of our personnel are EMTs and trained to provide Basic Life Support. In some situations an ambulance may be coming from a greater distance and a fire truck can start patient care.

2. When do I need to change my smoke detector batteries?

It is suggested that you change your batteries twice a year. What is the best way to remember this? When times changes, change your smoke detector batteries. If you need smoke detectors we have a few at DeFuniak Springs Fire Department.

3. What can I legally burn and when can I burn it?

Normally, citizens are allowed to burn small piles of leaves or small limbs as long as the fire is out by sunset. Residents can obtain a burn permit by calling the Division of Forestry at (850) 547-7085. Open burning is not allowed within the city limits of DeFuniak Springs.

4. What is your response time?

Our average response time within City limits is five minutes.

1. When will I be contacted for an interview?

Each Department has a different hiring process with a different time line. You may be contacted by phone the same day you apply or several weeks later. We will either call you for an interview or you will receive a letter by mail notifying you that you were not selected at this time for this position. Please contact HR for more information.

We do not close a posting until an applicant has been chosen for hire unless otherwise stated in the job notice.

3. Where can I find your job postings?

We post open positions on our website, in the DeFuniak Herald, on the bulletin board at City Hall, and at the Community Center.

4. Can I apply for a job that is not posted?

If you turn in your application stating that you wish to be considered for any open position, we will review your qualifications and consider your application accordingly. Should there not be any open positions at that time, we will retain your application until the next position becomes open and submit it the hiring supervisor for consideration.

5. Can I apply for a job online?

No. You can download our Employment Application, complete it, and turn it in to us by fax, email, or hand deliver.

6. Do I need to fill out another application if I already have one on file with the City?

Yes. Due to FL retention laws, we except applications for each position open and once the position has been filled, all applications considered are placed in a file in a locked cabinet. These applications that have already been considered will not be pulled to be considered for another open position. However, you may complete one application and make copies to submit for other open positions you would like to be considered for at a later date.

2. Are rental cars available at the airport?

Yes. Rental cars are available for pick-up and drop-off at the DeFuniak Springs Airport through Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Reservations are required.

3. Is hangar space available at the DeFuniak Springs Municipal Airport?

The City's 16 T-hangar units are currently full. A waiting list has been established in order to fill any vacancies on a first come first serve basis. Month to month community hangar space may periodically become available. Contact the Airport Services Supervisor for details.

1. How do I establish utility service for an existing residence?

Contact the Utility Billing at (850) 892-8503 to establish new utility service. The consumer will need to submit an application with two forms of identification (Social Security Card and FL Drivers License) and pay adequate deposits.

Contact Public Works at (850) 892-8534 for outages on Baldwin Avenue and Circle Drive. For all others, contact the local electric company, Gulf Power at (850) 892-2154.

5. Who do I call to get bushes/trees trimmed back at an intersection?

Contact the Public Works Department at (850) 892-8534 and they will create a Work Order for the Street Department.

7. Where can I get a trash can?
